TEACHER TRAINING
by The Yoga Root
Our Yoga Root Teacher Training (YRTT) program is currently under development, as we’ve decided to create our own from scratch. Most programs teach from a prescribed template, but we’re a dynamic studio that incorporates several disciplines.
Yes, it means a lot of work as it’s written one page at a time and we can’t take students till next year. But it also means a unique, dynamic, and memorable experience that sets us apart from most studios. Read about it below.

Dynamic + INTEGRATIVE
Unlike most programs, we teach a diverse set of knowledge. Our YTT is highly informed by counselling & psychotherapy practices, cognitive & nutritional sciences, qi gong, somatic movement & postural analysis. We blend and incorporate these disciplines in a cohesive and effective way so that you have the skills to teach any person, regardless of ability or experience with yoga.
For instance, with an awareness of principles in counselling one can speak in an inclusive and safe manner that facilitates relaxation. With an awareness of posture analysis, one can truly understand why someone is having difficulty with the postures, which is more complex than simply ‘correcting alignment.’
This program goes well beyond ‘understanding yoga,’ and into ‘effective teaching through yoga.’
teaching in training
As a fully functioning and busy studio, our student-teachers get a unique advantage in gaining ‘real world’ experiences being a teacher. Under the guidance of Derrick Dark, you will get a few opportunities to teach a live class to different groups of people. Teaching is a living, breathing thing that cannot simply be taught in books & scripts. Through our program, you will gain pivotal experience in actually teaching real students.
Secondly, you’ll get to practice your skills in teaching diverse groups. For instance, we may curate a teaching plan for adults on the autism spectrum, people needing wheelchair assistance, children, etc.
Our goal is that you leave this program feeling fully capable and confident to teach any group of people, with the experience to support that.
small groups
We’re not teaching from a prescribed script for any student willing to pay the price, like many programs out there. Instead, we take a limited number of students with similar experiences and direction in yoga so we can begin teaching to where they are, right now.
Small groups also allow for a stronger bond between students and teachers, as we do several activities together like climbing Croagh Patrick, cycling the greenway, and communal dining events.
Someone practicing yoga 5+ years is at a different point that someone just starting; and a physiotherapist will have a different approach than a psychotherapist to their mind/body. With small groups, we can ensure there is detailed teaching that speaks to the experience of the student.
More than “teaching how to teach”
We’re an “off-script” kinda studio, that’s more concerned with your personal development & community engagement than seeing if you can perfect Warrior 3. How you relate to yourself and the world around you is more important than any asana.
To support this growth, we’ll be immersed in community involvement activities from creating fundraisers for charities, beach clean-ups, volunteering where needed, etc. This will not only empower you to get involved back home, but also enhance how you relate to the world around you.
